I have a question about founder effects. How does one use the term with reference to RNA viruses?Founder effects were initially described to describe the adaptation of multicellular organization to new formerly empty environments or niches. They have also come to mean the spill over of viruses from one species to another!Fauci and others have now used founder effect to describe the movement of HIV-1 via human carriage from West Africa, to Haiti to New York City! Is that a correct utilization of the term?Thank you.Bohdan A Oryshkevich, MD, MPH

Thank you for a great talk. We have been studying SIVcpz at Gombe with Beatrice Hahn. It is quitter pathogenic here! Here are some papers. We are now following up infected individuals that are surviving longer.
