could you characterize the Duke BOX storage- in terms of cost, size, location, backup: is this onsite- or cloud?
Mick DiGrazia
53:13
Hi, Scott. Duke BOX storage is a cloud-based storage service that’s provided entirely by a third party. The terms and conditions for Duke are managed by OIT for the entire organization, so I cannot speak to the cost to Duke, although it is ‘funded’ for all users, so there is no cost allocation. There are limits to the number/size of files, but I would need to look up the specifics.

Specifically for genome sequencing data: there are several standardized analysis packages (written in R) that are available through Amazon cloud computing: will the Cloud storage be compatible (visible?) to these Amazon cloud computing resources? Please comment on tiering and speed of access, as well as associated costs, and any HIPPA/security rules around analysis of clinical sequence data..

Our goal is to make the data available from S3 storage to Amazon compute and analysis tools. We will need to get permission from Security and Compliance, but that’s what we will be working on now. We have sign off for HIPAA/PHI data in our S3 service.

Terri provided support transferring files to archive from Isilon to S3 in house. Do you also provide support to transfer to S3 Amazon cloud?
Mick DiGrazia
58:58
Cost of those packages would incur charges outside of storage, so you would be generating costs for S3 (Duke Secure Cloud Storage) as well as the compute tools. Data would be tiered according to usage - if you do a lot of analysis, your data will stay at the standard tier. If not, it will be recalled, as needed, from lower tiers

@Tomasa - Terri and I are working on a project to do exactly that now. She will likely demonstrate how we do that next, if there is still time

If you are interested in moving your data to Duke Secure Cloud Storage, please let me and/or Terri know and we will contact you to coordinate

Will do! Thank you!

01:01:45
How do we move large data sets from our collaborators to either Tier 5 object or AWS?
Kristi Prather, M.P.H.
01:01:48
Is there a macro to move a lot of files all at once?
Mick DiGrazia
01:02:36
Terri will demonstrate how we are moving data now. We use this starfish tool, which is a bit manual (not a macro), but certainly will manage the transmission of the data. We will provide this as a service for anyone that cannot move data on their own
Alex Sibley
01:02:46
Is Secure Cloud Storage accessible from outside of the Duke network (i.e., do I need to be on the VPN to access)?
Bernie Fischer
01:04:12
Yes all in place.
Bernie Fischer
01:05:18
Can we use globus to move to Tier 5 object storage from collaborators
Kristi Prather, M.P.H.
01:05:36
How do permissions work in this new cloud storage environment?
Rebecca Beerman
01:08:40
Has DHTS created any user-guides to help people fill out the information in Portunus? Or are any future workshops planned? I think this will be really useful, but there are always details/questions the first time we use something, that can be challenging to predict
Rebecca Beerman
