Why the detour to law school? Has Dr. Tweedy used that degree?

46:37
The question I have is whether Dr. Tweedy knows of nonprofits in our region or on the national level that address the issues of health care inequities. The book inspired me to want to support such organizations if I can.

48:23
Could you talk about the current number of African American physicians at Duke today. also the numbers in medical students.

49:33
Does anyone know if there has been any sensitivity training for thee Duke faulty since the “change the lights” incident?

51:05
So interesting. I was standing behind an elderly white man in the grocery store a few days ago. The cashier was black and this old gentleman went through great pains in handing his payment over to not touch the woman’s hands.

51:38
Question: You wrote about how, as an intern, you did not feel that you could challenge a senior physician’s diagnosis of an inappropriate psychiatric disorder. Are today’s medical students or physicians-in-training encouraged to question senior physicians?

52:06
Exactly my point. Medicine being reflective of the larger society.

I found that characteizattion

57:30
characterization to be very offensive.

57:55
Tough experience with my Mom at appt w/endocrinologist who chided her for taking her BP like it was a hobby, asked how much education she had, and if her diet included Vienna sausages. So glad I was there as her BP shot up and she dissolved into tears. This was a first appointment for a referral.

58:54
Family caregivers must be prepared to be advocates.

58:59
Heartbreaking story, Willetha.

01:00:23
I shouldn't say this, but I am. I am frustrated the Ms. Welch is doing so much talking. I didn't come to see her.

01:00:51
I am so sorry that happened to your mom, Willetha. It’s heartbreaking and disturbing. The ethos first do no harm apparently has its limits.

01:00:59
I agree.

01:01:31
I agree also

01:01:56
Agree 100% with Willietha. The health care industry uses navigators to get patients in for appointments, yet often does not seem to listen to the patient or provide any support to patients once they are in the exam room or hospital bed.

01:02:05
Great caregiver advice!

01:04:02
And COVID protocols have made that nearly impossible, with limits on visitors/caregivers from family or friends.

01:04:23
FYI, I came to Duke in the Radiation Oncology dept in 1983 from Connecticut. We had several Black therapists both men and women treating patients. I was concerned that some white patients might object but it never happened Maybe cancer has a positive effect on one’s inherent biases

01:05:48
Can Dr Tweedy comment on treatment of Cv-19 of minorities, and attitudes of Blacks to vaccines and access to vaccines. Bob

01:12:29
Definitely the case with COVID-19. It is NOT a political issue. Its’ an issue of public health.

01:13:02
Has Obamacare worked?

01:15:09
What made you focus on psychiatry? There is such a stigma around mental health in the Black community.

01:15:14
How can we make our state legislatures understand the importance of medicaid/healthcare to all people?

01:21:13
Similar to Wells Fargo’s CEO stating that there is a dearth of talent among Black people so diversity is a challenge for the company. Ridiculous!

01:22:50
From the obituary of Dr. James Bryan in the N&O, a wonderful physician I knew who helped my mother through her final illness with cancer, and helped me through that difficult time.

01:23:35
"[Jim] taught me, and many others, that each patient was an individual worthy of respect and kindness. " Sorry, message and quote got separated.

01:24:53
Eugenics!

01:25:15
Went on through the 1970s
